Laser prostate surgery uses concentrated laser energy to remove or vaporize enlarged prostate tissue that is obstructing the flow of urine. A surgical scope is passed through the urethra to reach the prostate, so the procedure generally does not require an external incision. The laser allows the urologist to precisely treat tissue surrounding the urinary channel while also helping control bleeding. Depending on the specific laser technique, prostate tissue may be vaporized or separated and removed. A urinary catheter is commonly used for a short period afterward. As swelling improves, patients may notice a stronger urine stream and better bladder emptying.
