Robotic partial nephrectomy removes a kidney tumor or abnormal area while preserving as much healthy kidney tissue as possible. Through several small abdominal incisions, the surgeon uses robotic instruments and a magnified three-dimensional view to carefully identify the mass and surrounding structures. Blood flow to part or all of the kidney may be temporarily controlled while the tumor is removed. The remaining kidney tissue is then reconstructed and blood flow restored. Preserving healthy kidney tissue can help maintain long-term kidney function while still treating the tumor. The removed tissue is sent to pathology to determine its exact diagnosis and characteristics.
