A transperineal prostate biopsy obtains tissue samples through the skin between the scrotum and anus rather than passing the biopsy needle through the rectum. Ultrasound is used to visualize the prostate, and MRI findings may be incorporated to target areas that appear suspicious. Through one or more small puncture sites, the physician guides a biopsy needle into different regions of the prostate and collects multiple tiny tissue samples. These samples are examined by a pathologist for cancer and other abnormalities. The transperineal approach provides access to multiple areas of the prostate and may reduce the risk of certain infections compared with approaches that pass through the rectum.
