Ureteroscopy with lithotripsy treats stones located in the ureter or kidney without requiring an external incision. A thin, flexible or rigid scope is passed through the urethra and bladder and then advanced into the ureter. Once the stone is identified, specialized energy is used to break it into smaller fragments. Depending on their size, fragments can be removed with tiny baskets or allowed to pass naturally after the procedure. A temporary ureteral stent may be placed to keep urine flowing and reduce the risk of obstruction while swelling resolves. Follow-up may include stent removal and imaging to confirm that the stone has been adequately treated.
