Bilateral ureteroscopy treats stones affecting both sides of the urinary system during the same procedure when it is considered appropriate and safe. A thin scope is passed through the urethra and bladder and then into each ureter and kidney, avoiding external incisions. Once stones are located, laser energy is used to fragment them into smaller pieces. Larger fragments may be removed with tiny retrieval instruments, while smaller pieces may pass naturally afterward. Temporary stents may be placed in one or both ureters to maintain urine drainage and allow swelling to resolve. Your urologist will determine when the stents should be removed after treatment.
