Bladder drainage with catheter placement is used when the bladder cannot empty normally or when continuous drainage is needed during treatment or recovery. A flexible catheter is carefully guided into the bladder, most commonly through the urethra, allowing urine to flow into a collection bag. In certain situations, a different route or specialized catheter may be required. Drainage can relieve uncomfortable bladder pressure, protect the urinary system from urine retention, and allow the bladder to rest. The catheter may remain in place temporarily or longer depending on the underlying condition. Your care team will explain catheter care and when removal or exchange is appropriate.
