Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate, or HoLEP, is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate. A surgical scope is passed through the urethra, allowing the urologist to reach the prostate without an external incision. A holmium laser precisely separates the enlarged prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow. The removed tissue is then divided into smaller pieces and taken out through the bladder. By opening the urinary channel, HoLEP can improve urine flow and bladder emptying. A urinary catheter is commonly left in place for a short period after the procedure while the area begins to heal.
