Dr. J. Travis Mendel is a board-certified radiation oncologist and Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Rio Grande Cancer Specialists. He provides comprehensive radiation oncology care for patients with a broad range of cancers, tailoring treatment to each person’s diagnosis, health, and goals.

Dr. Mendel also directs the practice’s theranostics program, which pairs specialized imaging with targeted radioactive therapies to identify and treat cancer. His professional interests include precision radiation therapy, theranostics, clinical research, and expanding access to advanced cancer care throughout El Paso and the surrounding Borderplex communities.

He earned his medical degree at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso and completed his radiation oncology residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Alongside his clinical practice, he participates in cancer research and physician education to help bring advances in treatment into community care.

Dr. Mendel’s approach emphasizes listening, clear communication, and shared decision-making. He works closely with patients, families, and referring physicians to develop individualized treatment plans that balance effective cancer treatment with quality of life, helping patients understand their options and feel supported throughout their care.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Mendel enjoys spending time with his family, flying as an instrument-rated pilot, staying active, and exploring new technology.
