Diagnostic ureteroscopy or pyeloscopy allows your urologist to look directly inside the ureter and the urine-collecting portion of the kidney. A very thin scope is passed through the urethra and bladder and then carefully advanced into the upper urinary tract, generally without an external incision. The camera provides a detailed view that can help identify stones, narrowing, tumors, unexplained bleeding, or other abnormalities that may not be fully characterized with imaging alone. If necessary, small tissue samples or urine samples may be collected during the procedure. A temporary ureteral stent may sometimes be placed afterward to support drainage and healing.
