TURP is a well-established procedure for relieving urinary obstruction caused by benign prostate enlargement. A surgical scope is inserted through the urethra to reach the prostate, so an external incision is not usually required. Using an electrical surgical loop or similar instrument, the urologist removes small portions of enlarged prostate tissue from around the urinary channel. This creates more space for urine to flow from the bladder through the urethra. A catheter is typically placed after surgery to drain the bladder and may also be used for irrigation while initial bleeding clears. Urinary flow often improves as postoperative swelling decreases.
